My head gets irritated when flaccid?

I bought a ring for retraction and it works really well when erect but when I go flaccid it gets unbearably irritated and I'm forced to take it off which reverses any keratinization I'm doing. I've tried vaseline but it just makes the ring easier to come off. Help?
